In memoriam Bernard Deheegher

Dear friends of the International Gregorian Festival of Watou,

It is with immense sadness and with a deep sense of defeat that we have to announce the peaceful passing of our founder, chairman, husband and father, Bernard Deheegher. He passed away at our home in Watou on October 13, 2021, lovingly surrounded by his family.

A feeling of great gratitude dominates at the thought of Bernard as founder and president of the Gregorian Festival of Watou, but we will also remember him as an ever loving family man.

The Festival was Bernard's life's work. It grew since 1981, from a one-day event in Watou with six national scholas, to a highly reputable Festival, in Watou and in nine partner towns. At the last edition in 2018, the Festival was spread over ten days and 30 ensembles from four continents participated.

The fourteenth edition was planned during the Ascension weekend this year. However, because of the Corona pandemic, this edition was postponed to May 2022. The program was ready and Bernard devoted all his forces to the further preparations.

We are convinced that this wonderful festival tradition should be kept alive. We therefore hope to welcome you to our activities in the future. After a period of mourning and reflection we will be pleased to keep you further informed.

The solemn funeral liturgy graced by the Gregorian choirs Cum Jubilo (Watou), Cantabo (Antwerp) and soloist Sowon Kim (South Korea), to which we kindly invite you, will take place in the parish church of St. Bavo in Watou on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 10:30 AM. (Possibility to greet in the church from 10:00 AM onwards).

Please find attached the obituary.

With our warmest regards,

Benoît Deheegher
